Matteo Ricci, S.J. (1552-1610)
Jesuit missionary to China; mathematician and cartographer who composed first European-style map of the world in Chinese. Invited in 1601 to become advisor to the Imperial Court of the Wanli Emperor, an honor accorded because of his scientific abilities and his ability to predict solar eclipses.
